Dear Alice,
My apartment is all carpet, save for the kitchen, immediate entrance area, and bathroom. I'm very clean and always leave shoes or sandals at the tiled entrance and never walk on the carpet to keep it as clean as possible, especially now that I just got it deep cleaned/shampooed. For some reason, visitors and friends always argue over me asking them to not walk on my carpet with any footwear, despite knowing how hard I work to keep my apartment clean. I've been called "rude," "anal," or told that "I need to chill," or not be so "uptight" on the whole shoes-on-the-carpet "thing."
It's gotten to the point where I've made a sign and taped it by the entrance to further remind and emphasize to people to please respect my house rules on keeping my carpet clean. Am I being unreasonable in asking for no shoes of any kind to walk on my clean carpet? How do I respond to all of the above comments and statements made? Also, when I've asked someone to remove their shoes I get the, "Oh! I'll just be a minute here" or "I'm not staying long; it'll take longer to take them off and put them on!" as an excuse to not abide by my rules. How would you address and handle this? It's come to the point whenever someone wants to come over I'm filled with dread because the shoe matter always becomes a battle. Help!
Sincerely,
Fed Up
