Hilary's Fun Boston Studio — House Call

Name: Hilary
Location: Back Bay/South End — Boston, Massachusetts

My couch, purchased from Zonal Furniture (R.I.P.) in Hayes Valley in San Francisco, California is oddly my pride and joy. I mean, who wouldn't love a couch made from sustainable materials, delivered by local neighborhood drivers, sold by a Canadian ex-pat from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan?

Maybe it's become my pride and joy because it fits perfectly in my tiny rental studio apartment in Boston, where I live now. My studio, with a foyer, walk-in closet, master bedroom, living room, office and eat-in kitchen is also something I am really proud of.

What I Love About My Small Home:

I LOVED this 90 yr old house the moment I walked in. With the textured white stucco walls & coved ceilings, it feels like living inside ocean foam. While small, the bulk of the square footage is used in the public rooms so the house feels bigger than it really is. I love all original elements that haven't been touched, like the large wood doors, baseboards & mahogany cabinets. I love the quality of light in this house-the tiny 2nd bedroom makes for a perfect art studio. I love that I can afford to be 2 blocks from the beach & feel the ocean breezes. I love how private the house feels even though it has glass in all doors & windows on most walls. I love the wacky mod-Morrocan tile that was used in the kitchen, bathroom & the dining room table. I even love the 60's chandelier in the dining room, which is the same one my parents had in our house growing up!

Can an Exterminator Legally Take Photos of My Apartment? — Good Questions

Q: I am wondering if it's unlawful for a pest control company to take photos of a tenant's residence while they are spraying the apartment. I was informed recently from my landlord that the exterminator takes photos while he sprays, and reports the photos back to the landlord. Is this even legal? I noticed flashes of light while he walks through my unit, but I've never actually caught him taking pics. Thanks for your reply. -Sent by Denise

Chelsea's "100% Me" Studio in Toronto — Small Cool 2016

Name: Chelsea
Location: Toronto Canada
Square Feet: 395
Division: International

What I Love About My Small Home:

It's hard to pick one thing that I love most about my small home. Apart from the beautiful view of the Toronto waterfront that I have been blessed with, it's filled with light and very cozy. I've never felt like it's too small (even when I have parties!), perhaps because I've created separate quarters for living, eating, and lounging.

I've customized and DIY'd a lot of my furniture and accents, like my feather ceiling lamp, magenta couch cover and Dorothy Draper-inspired dresser. This makes my home feel 100% 'me'. I ignored the traditional rules of small living - to declutter and live minimally - and have surrounded myself with the things that make me happy - books, my collection of magnets from countries I have travelled to, and have filled up every wall and shelf with art and photos of friends, family and travel.

Every time I walk in the door, I feel a sense of belonging, which is the feeling a home should invoke.
