Furniture can be one of the large investments you will make in your lifetime and it deserves the best care you can give it. In this article we'll discuss some tips in keeping hardwood furniture, including: dusting, cleaning, polishing and keeping furniture away from the sun.
Below are 4 basic tips in keeping hardwood furniture:
Dusting
Don't avoid dusting furniture. Frequent dusting removes airborne deposits that build up in a filmy layer and can scratch the surface. Clean, dry, soft cloths or feather dusters will effectively remove dust; however, to avoid scattering the dust into the air, where it floats until landing back on furniture surfaces, dampen the cloth very slightly. Cleaning
Target any grease or sticky spots on unsealed wood with a gentle cleaning solution of soap or mild detergent dissolved in water, using a clean, damp cloth to spot-treat the affected area.
Once the mark has been removed, rinse carefully and wipe with a dry cloth.
Harder stains such as watermarks or alcohol spots can also be cleaned, but will require a stronger solution such as polish. If your furniture has a finish, refer to the manufacturer's guidelines to check which polishing products are suitable, as this can vary widely. Source: Cleanipedia
Polishing
A few times a year, polish natural woods to keep them from drying out. Always use the same kind of polish. If you use oil polish one time and wax polish the next, it could cause a cloudy finish.
Avoid silicone finishes because they are hard to remove and can build up over time. They also show smudges more. Laminates, varnishes, and sealed wood surfaces do not need polishing. Just wipe them off with a damp cloth. Source: Clean-Organized-Family-Home
Keeping Furniture Away From the Sun
The temperature of the summer sun coming through a window can go above 140 degrees. It will cook fine finishes, fading and destroying them over time, and dry out and shrink the wood, which will cause cracks. Don't place wood furniture near heating units or vents. Dry heat will cause the wood to dry and shrink, leaving cracks. Use a humidifier in the drier months to bring the moisture up to the 40 to 45 percent level. Source: NewsTimes
