If we humans dread the end of summer, think about how poor plants feel. People get coats and sweaters to arm against the elements, but they rely on us to keep them safe and happy. You've done a good job all season, but leave them outside too long after Labor Day, or bring them inside without proper prep, and it's a shock to their little systems. It's not often that we say it's a matter of life and death, but this is one of those times.
