When a design writer goes in search of photos of beautifully-decorated common-hall entryways, one generally turns up, well, nothing. Renters have to overcome some tall mental hurdles – creeping thoughts of "this is temporary" and "I don't own this place" – to even start decorating the inside of their apartment and making it home. Suggesting that they let their style spill over and claim (temporary) ownership of their tiny sliver of the shared hallway? Well that's asking a lot.
