MBS Day Ahead: Bond Momentum Shifts to Neutral Ahead of Bigger Market Movers

Friday and Monday were (relatively) great days for bond markets. For our purposes, at least, they signified an important push back against the more serious selling that began after the house passed the budget bill (the one that cleared the way for tax reform) on October 20th. Here's the recap from the 20th, if you want to get caught up. Yesterday and today (what we've seen so far, anyway) have been relatively more sideways an infinitely more equivocal. While this isn't typically the way the last and first days of the month play out (we usually see more volatility around the change-over between months), we can reconcile this instance of flat bond trading as a product of indecision or anxiety ahead of the upcoming Fed and tax reform news. Sometimes things can be misleading, or don’t tell the whole story. For example, a 15-oz. bottle of Naked Green Machine juice smoothie has more sugar in it than 5 Krispy Kreme original glazed donuts. Employment data is often accused of being misleading, but hiring always picks up during the holidays and United Parcel Service is adding 95,000 seasonal workers for the holidays. Purchase Apps Almost Break Even While Refis Slide

The week ended October 27 saw yet another decline in mortgage applications, making it the sixth week out of the last seven that the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) Market Composite Index has fallen. The index, a measure of application volume, was down 2.6 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis during the week ended October 27. On an unadjusted basis the Index decreased 3 percent when compared to the previous week. As has been the recent case, the decrease was distributed across both purchase mortgages and refinances. The Refinance Index was down 5 percent from the week ended October 20 and has also posted only a single increase in the last seven weeks.
